My favorite breakfast
I have to admit....before I started eating "clean" my husband would eat this all the time, and I'd throw-up in my mouth (ok...that's a bit of an exaggeration...maybe a lot of an exaggeration). But, mind you, that is also the time that I thought eating Raisin Bran was like the healthiest breakfast in the world! (HA)!
After I got over my addiction to sugar...I started eating this cereal...and after the 2nd or 3rd time, I couldn't get enough of it! Sometimes, I'd eat it for breakfast AND lunch! When I lay down at night, I cannot wait to wake up so I can eat this cereal. (that is NOT an exaggeration!)
I CRAVE THIS STUFF!!!
Brian's Oatmeal Cereal
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1/8 cup grape nuts
lots of cinnamon...and i mean lots!
*if we have any fresh berries on hand...like blueberries or blackberries, we toss those in too!!
I eat mine with Almond milk. Stir stir stir to blend in the cinnamon. MMMMMmmmmm GOOOOOOD!

Where do you get the grape nuts??
Jamie,
I LOVE your blog and all of great ideas!! I just wrote down 4 recipes to try and we talked about it at dinner last night, changes we can make as a family.
I think it is going to be gradual, but I really want to start eating better and also help my kids to make even better choices.
Thank you for your inspiration and your willingness to share you knowledge with all of us.
Also, as you know Costco is not close. :( One of the horrible things about PA. I am going to check our Sam's club and see what things they have that are comparable.
And, What brand of Almond Milk do you buy? I've looked at many different kinds at Wegmans and I am not sure what kind to get.
And, do your kids eat all of these meals as well. When Ellie heard some of this stuff, she said, "Well, we don't have to do all of that do we?" Any suggestions on easing your kids into these changes?
Thank you!!!!
YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
HI CAMILLE!!!
It NEEDS to be gradual...or else it will be too overwhelming for you and your kids.
About the Costco thing....I'm pretty sure Sams club will have a lot of similar products! Or you might just have to make a monthly trip!! (I wish I could go shop at Wegmans and give you a list for there!!!)
I buy Silk PureAlmond Original Almond Milk, because Costco carries that brand, so its a lot cheaper, and also because it isn't the added sugar kind. Make sure whatever brand you buy that it's not the vanilla kind, or doesn't have any added sugar.
As far as kids and meals go. My kids eat what I cook for dinner. They are great eaters. If we ever try something new...the rule is...they can't say they don't like it until they try it. Breakfast and lunch is a different story. Usually for lunch, it's pure chaos...Lewis needs a bottle, Ais has just got home from school, and Easton is STARVING (like he always is), so I get something for them like PB and honey, and Almond butter and honey sandwiches (on whole wheat bread) with fruit (like sliced apples or bananas) or salad (they love salad), or Annies Organic Mac & Cheese, etc. Then, after they are all fed, I make lunch for myself.
Same with breakfast. I actually keep a gallon of milk in our home for the kids' cereal in the morning. If we are out, they will drink almond milk, but for right now they prefer milk. But they probably only have cereal once or twice a week. (I still have about 20 boxes of "sugar" cereal in my pantry. I'm going to let them go through that, and then find some other healthier alternatives for them, because those cereals are NOT good) They do eat the protein pancakes we make, and they also love eggs. Eggs on toast, boiled eggs, etc.
I try and make my meals as fun and kid friendly as possible. I also add a little cheese to their veggies, or sprinkle a little pink or blue sugar on their whole wheat sandwiches, or serve fruit and veggies with a toothpick to eat it with. Sometimes they just need little distractions! But they really do enjoy these good healthy foods, just like I do!
But serioulsy, making all these changes GRADUALLY is best. One step at a time! You don't want them thinking that they are being deprived of anything.
I'm still making changes too!
One other thing...me and Bri are always talking about how great these healthy foods are and how good we feel when we eat them, they really pay attention to what we say, and then want what we eat! We make a juice in the juicer that has carrots, celery, apple, pinapple and orange, and I thought for sure they wouldn't like it. But because me and Bri were drinking some......they wanted some and they love it!!! Seriously your example is key!
